First birthdays are always the most exciting birthday parties to plan for parents. For their baby girl’s first birthday party, you want a theme that’s appropriate for her age, but also fun for your guests. A birthday theme that is fitting for a girl’s first birthday is Mermaid Under the Sea. This whimsical party theme can seem like a challenge to plan, but with a few tips and ideas, it’ll be a breeze.

Mermaid Invitations

Let guests know what to expect at this first birthday by creating cute and fun invitations, these can either be hand made invitations or store bought. Be sure to find invitations that include Mermaids or have an Under the Sea theme to them. This invitation featured here has a clam shell outside and a pop out mermaid that stands prominent.

Mermaid Decorations

Decorating for your Mermaid party can seem daunting, but we have a few ideas that will definitely impress your guests. Using mini mason jars, fill the jar half way with graham cracker crumbs or real sand, then place a small mermaid figurine into the jar. The mermaid figurines shown here are rings, this provides support for the mermaid to stand up right. You can also make decorations by tracing out different sea creatures and mermaids, and adhering them to skewers. These are double duty decorations since they can also be photo props and decorations. Lastly, taking festive ribbons you can make a back drop for your photo booth, but also add some whimsical mock waves. The ribbons will have a natural curve and bend like waves and add an under the sea feel. You can also create under water air bubbles by using opaque balloons and fish wire, just tie several balloons together about 2 to 3 inches apart using the fish wire.

Under the Sea Food

For your mermaid party, seafood would be the obvious choice but be sure to have a few non seafood items ready as well. Serve food dishes with sea food items like crab, shrimp, fish, since these are all under the sea. You can even get creative food names like calling watermelon slices shark bait, green sour belt candies can be seaweed candy, and white candies can be called oyster pearls. Although seafood isn’t a favorite for everyone, you can serve non seafood items but give them clever names as well.

Under the Sea Drinks

To get the perfect ocean water drink, simply select a blue colored drink mix, preferable one that is kid friendly, then mix into a big bowl or drink dispenser. To add that under the sea feel, you can decorate the bowl or dispenser to mimic an under the sea creature. You can also get really creative and festive by using a fish ice mold to make fish shaped ice cubes, or making fun mermaid straw decorations for your party.

Mermaid Cookies

Mermaid cookies may not really exist but you can create your own mermaid cookies. Using a star shaped cookie cutter you can create starfish cookies. Decorate these cookies with icing to get that starfish look. You can also have traditional round cookies and decorate these cookies with the same icing for a cohesive look. You can also try making “clam cookies” by icing two cookies together to look like an open clam.

Mermaid Cakepops

Cakepops are fun to serve at a kid’s party since they’re small bites and less of a mess. You can decorate these cakepops to look like pearls or sea creatures. We recommend pearls, since this is a baby girl’s birthday but you can have a combination of both.

Mermaid Under the Sea Cupcake

Cupcakes are also nice to have at a kids party since they’re small like the cake pops and each child can have their own individual cake. For a fun cupcake set up, you can arrange the cupcakes into a fish shape.

Mermaid Cake

What’s a birthday party without a cake? If you are purchasing a cake you can ask the baker to include a mermaid figure, either edible or non edible, and some coral. You can also request that the cake be in a blue hue.

Under The Sea Favors

Favors are the best part of a party, and the more whimsical and creative the favor the better. We chose a few favors we liked for this birthday party. Since this is a first birthday our “Beach Buddies” Seashore Candles are the most adorable favors. They are also great decoration pieces to use in different areas of the party location. If a photo booth is going to be a feature at your party then our Life’s a Beach Frame is a fabulous favor. Guests will enjoy having something to remember the party with and some place safe to keep their photos. For a unique gift, that could be considered practical, is our Starfish Scented Soaps. Shaped to mimic a starfish these soaps are adorably designed, and since kids are always getting their hands messy, I guess you can say they can be practical.
